I tell ya what, Somerset Dam is a beautiful spot, we stayed at the Lake Somerset Holiday Park for about $18 per night or $28ish for two people for one night.
It was July and the fog seemed to be pretty bad, didn't lift till about 10am on both mornings, didn't stop us fishing though.
The dam is only open to boats from 6am - 6pm. My grandfather put his red claw pots out the first night I got there and got 4/8 stolen. Second night none were stolen. There are rumours that locals steal the crab pots and maybe its not so much a rumour, just be careful!
We fished out on the boat mid morning to late arvo near the wood (trees poking out of the water) we would tie the boat up to a tree and drop your line straight down! I foul hooked a big Catfish/Dewfish and Pop caught a Talarpia. Thanks for the lend of the extra Life Jacket Somerset Fishing and Tackle!
Red Claw traps go alright in the wood as well, we were bringing in about 20-40 a day. Just watch for the sneaky traps that are tied to trees inconspicuously, for some reason I didn't feel it was a good idea to park your trap right next to one of those and there seems to be a fair few of them.
Fishing in the wood was hit and miss, lots of fish coming up on the fish tracker but not sure how accurate this may be as the second day we sat out there all day. My Brother was also out on his Kayak and all of us had no bites.......UNTIL......

My brother offered me a go at his brand new Kayak. Evelyn and I are meeting up with Viking Kayaks next weekend and neither of us have tried kayak fishing before. I jumped at the opportunity to try my brothers out from Kayak2Fish. I jumped in to the kayak just with myself, my phone and my two rods, one with a Vibe Motor oil soft plastic lure from www.fishing.com and the other with a live shrimp (maybe not so live after the previous few hours fishing haha). I really wasn't expecting to catch anything so I was really unprepared. My pop and brother took off in the boat to go check the red claw traps about 5 min away. NEXT MINUTE Bang i'm on, I reel in this 43 cm Yellow Belly, caught off my vibe lure, right need the waters edge. As it was my first time kayak fishing and I had nothing on me, I had no idea where to put the fish, how to get it off the hook. I made a quick phone call to pop and said I caught a fish come and get me!! Meanwhile the fish has fallen off the lure and wriggled its way under my leg (i'm screaming) haha and all I had to hold it was my brothers good Nike Jacket haha! Sorry jess!
Pop and Jessie came and saved the day, Jessie was a little annoyed that I christened his Kayak hahahaha!

Yellow Belly was good eating, we fried it up in Butter, salt and pepper, Evelyn may not have been as impressed as I was. We also fried up the red claw the same way (once peeled) Yummo!
Met Robbie from Somerset Fishing and Tackle who had a tackle van there, you can also hire kayaks and other gear. He mainly has lures and gear, everything you need to catch a keeper from the dam and he is full of knowledge, knows this dam like the back of his hand. Thanks Robbie for hookin a sista up with some mad gear for our QLD Flatty Comp at the end of the month held by Yak Hunters Australia. We will be back at Somerset next weekend, see you then, I am sure you will be seeing alot more of us especially when we get our Viking Kayaks!
