The mystery cod.... Evie was away so my brother (@hookabrothaup) took me fishing at what was supposed to be his secret spot. But it turned out we couldn't get into his secret spot so this is where the adventure began.
We got our Kayaks off the roof, mine is a Viking Espri Kayak and my brother has a Kayak2fish Kayak, see my review on both here.
We were on the Gold Coast in the Nerang River...AND I now know where the BIGGEST cod is hiding, stuck, between two rock pools. Any wonder he's so big, he eats everything in sight, he is the king of that water hole. He owns it. You could tell this just by how inquisitive he was about us being in his water hole.
Jessie, my brother and I set off at a bridge, we may have squeezed the kayaks through some barbed wire fencing on private property, but not for long, once we were in the water we were safe. Any mans land. We fished the first hole, then carried the kayaks out of the water and into the next hole. This was the case for about another four holes before we met old mate cod.
Here I was fishing and next minute I see this fish fin popping out of the water and THE BIGGEST FISH I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE...maybe not the truth but it was a good expression at the time. He popped over right near me to say hello. Jessie, my brother and I were quite scared to bump kayaks or paddle or splash or make noise but it turned out this guy did not give two hoots about us. He was secure, and smart. He knew not to eat whatever we wanted to feed him.. even if it literally swam infant of his face.
So it turns out you can only catch Mary River Cod upstream of the alls of Cresbrook, Hinze, Maroon, Moogerah, North Pine, Somerset and Wivenhoe dams, and lakes Dyer (Bill Gunn Dam and Clarendon)
No more than one in possession and 50cm min.
You can't catch Mary River Cod elsewhere in QLD.
I think this guy is protected and so he should be. He's too smart anyway.
