The Mystery Cod

The mystery cod.... Evie was away so my brother (@hookabrothaup) took me fishing at what was supposed to be his secret spot. But it turned out we couldn't get into his secret spot so this is where the adventure began.

We got our Kayaks off the roof, mine is a Viking Espri Kayak and my brother has a Kayak2fish Kayak, see my review on both here.

We were on the Gold Coast in the Nerang River...AND I now know where the BIGGEST cod is hiding, stuck, between two rock pools. Any wonder he's so big, he eats everything in sight, he is the king of that water hole. He owns it. You could tell this just by how inquisitive he was about us being in his water hole.

Jessie, my brother and I set off at a bridge, we may have squeezed the kayaks through some barbed wire fencing on private property, but not for long, once we were in the water we were safe. Any mans land. We fished the first hole, then carried the kayaks out of the water and into the next hole. This was the case for about another four holes before we met old mate cod.

Here I was fishing and next minute I see this fish fin popping out of the water and THE BIGGEST FISH I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE...maybe not the truth but it was a good expression at the time. He popped over right near me to say hello. Jessie, my brother and I were quite scared to bump kayaks or paddle or splash or make noise but it turned out this guy did not give two hoots about us. He was secure, and smart. He knew not to eat whatever we wanted to feed him.. even if it literally swam infant of his face.

So it turns out you can only catch Mary River Cod upstream of the alls of Cresbrook, Hinze, Maroon, Moogerah, North Pine, Somerset and Wivenhoe dams, and lakes Dyer (Bill Gunn Dam and Clarendon)

No more than one in possession and 50cm min.

You can't catch Mary River Cod elsewhere in QLD.

I think this guy is protected and so he should be. He's too smart anyway.

Check out the vids from the day

About Hookasistaup.

Sarah Horgan

Howdy I'm Sarah (aka Ned) and I have been fishing since I was a young girl. My Grandfather, Dad and Brother are the men responsible for my fishing passion and also the men who taught me to fish from a young age.

Evelyn and I started fishing together in April 17 and realised we were pro's, out-fishing men on most occasions, haha. On our first fishing adventure we came up with the crazy Idea of 'The Fishtail Sistas', and soon enough Hookasistaup was born.

I love the adrenaline rush, feeling your heart pound in your chest when you get a bite or you hook a good size fish. I love making people realise that girls can catch fish too, and we can also kill and gut them (why is everyone always so surprised?). I love inspiring other women to get out there and give it a go too, fishing isn't just for men so go get your hands dirty and enjoy the adventure. You never know, it might change your life, just as it has for us!

Follow us on our FISHING, Hiking, handstanding, Pole dancing, adventures and watch us pay it forward with Good Deads done, this is livin Barry, Get on Board, your in for a REEL ride!

Gday I'm Evie and I have only recently just found my love for fishing. I never grew up fishing but it has now become a big part of my life! I still remember the first ever fish I caught and from that moment I was hooked. I love that fishing teaches you that some days you'll catch something big and some days you won't, but always be thankful for nature, the sun in the sky, the way the moon reflects on the water and my best mate beside me. No matter if its hot as hell or cold like Antarctica I'm willing to get out there and give it a crack. It isn't always about what fish we bring home but about getting out there making memories, having fun, loving every minute and sharing our adventures with you all. And yes I know I fish like a girl!
