What a beautiful morning it was! We woke up at 330am for a 4am departure. Somerset Dam is approx 1.5 hours drive from Brisbane North. Head towards the Sunshine Coast, then take exit 152 for Kilcoy. Pretty much follow this for 51km until you see a sign that says Somerset Dam - Google maps will get you there anyway but make sure you type in lake Somerset Holiday Park, if you make the mistake of typing in Somerset Dam you will end up at the dam wall and I am not sure if you can do much there in the way of loading and unloading/parking/fishing ect.
Arriving before Sunrise is THE BEST idea. You get to see an amazing sunrise and plus, fish are ALWAYS hungry in the morning - aren't we all? (haha coffee is food in our case, or hot choccy for Evelyn).
We arrived at 5:30, sun is usually starting to rise from 6am but on this morning the fog was so thick it was about 7 before we saw any rays of light, but when we did oh wow it was a sight!
There is not much point arriving at Somerset Dam much before 6am as the boom gates to the Boat ramp don't drop until 6am, you could always park in the holiday park day visitors park and carry your Kayak down but its a decent walk! There are public toilets available within walking distance from the boat ramp and so are picnic tables. (Who has time for eating anyway - unless its fish :P).

This pic is of us with the foggy Dam in the back ground, and the Kayaks just before we lanched them.
We ended up getting in the water at about 6:45/7am as the fog was so thick, its not a good idea to be paddling around in the fog if there are boats hooting around with no visibility. They won't see you and you will only be able to hear them so we waited for the fog to lift and then headed out. It was sooooooooooo beautiful being on the water at this time.

We pretty much headed right from the boat ramp about 500m, and ended up directly in front of the caravan park boat ramp, there is a little island out the front and we were on the other side of that, which was the opposite side of the dam bank from the park boat ramp. This is where the BASS hide.
Here we were, chillin, fishing, next minute I hear Evelyn SCREAMING, she's hooked a fish and she's reeling it in! GO GIRL! I turn the GOPRO on and paddle as fast as I can over to her Kayak and yep, she's reeled in a very decent size Bass - 44 cm. She decided to release it back into the Dam. We were all using Halco Twistie's recommended to us by Robbie from Somerset Fishing and Tackle. Evelyn was using a Chrome coloured one and I was using Gold. Thanks Robbie!

She was so happy! So surprised and Impressed with how the Kayak felt whilst reeling in this big fish. She was a little apprehensive about catching a fish in it prior to us going out as she didn't know what to expect. Now she knows how stable the Viking Espri is and how well it paddles and so she's REEL keen on our Flatty comp next weekend with Yak Hunters Australia. Lookout Men and Women this girl CAN hook a winner.
